FOR THE MOTHERS

FOR THE MOTHERS

A woman with short hair and a sleeveless top sitting on an outdoor wooden bench, holding hands with a young child in a garden with large leafy plants in the background.

I'm Claudia, an Austrian-born Australia-based photographer and writer. Images and words have been part of my life for as long as I can remember; my work compelled by the obsessive need to tell stories - yours, mine, humanities.

Photography for me is a tool for connection far beyond just documentation. A tool for healing, expressing, seeing, quietly understanding.

All layers of living and loving.

I began photographing mothers at the start of the pandemic. A dual need for connection and the revelation that image making is more than image making gained weight and significance in my practice.

Mother to mother a relationship was formed beyond the lens. The work expanded from “motherhood session” to connecting over shared joys, heartaches, desires, lack of fulfilment of basic human needs, dreams crushed and dreams blossomed.

There was a hunger for truth, empathy, authenticity and a thirst for their (our) layered experiences, their (our) beautiful but often brutal metamorphosis to be heard, acknowledged, seen.

And so my work evolved - now defined by making and capturing beauty through creating environments in which women feel safe to express, to stand still, to laugh, cry, to embrace the mess and chaos and feel not only comfortable but empowered in the process of having themselves and their families photographed and their stories told.
